Pensioners' Charter

Every individual should have the choice of retiring from paid employment on reaching the age of 60 years.  They should then be able to live free of care and with dignity.  To bring this about we call upon Governments to immediately implement the following charter.

1 Every individual who has reached the age of 60 years and is not in paid employment should receive a weekly pension not less than 50% of average earnings, to be updated annually

2 All pensioners should, if they desire it, be entitled to be examined by qualified medical, nursing, dental and optical practitioners at least once each year.  On reaching 75 years they should have this entitlement bi-annually.  In addition, a qualified social worker should visit all pensioners at least once each year unless requested not to.

3 Every pensioner who is unable to maintain a life of decency and dignity will be entitled to adequate assistance dependent on need.  Should any pensioner be denied adequate assistance they will have their need assessed by a tribunal, two of whose members must be nominated by a recognised Pensioners Body.

4 Should a pensioner be unable to maintain a life of decency and dignity in their own home then they will be entitled to care in a residential or nursing home dependent solely on need.  Should this be denied then need would be assessed as in 3 above.

5 Pensioners living in their own homes will be entitled to have their homes brought to a standard of warmth and insulation to maintain an even temperature irrespective of external temperatures.  This standard should be brought about at minimal cost to pensioners.

6 Pensioners should have access to adequate travel facilities to enable them to enjoy a reasonable social and comfortable life and be able to access all necessary services.  Every pensioner should have access to an adequate telephone service.

Those aspiring to Govern us either nationally or locally should automatically be prepared to agree to this reasonable minimum charter.
